George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Civil Unrest, protests and even riots in Minneapolis, Portland, and across the nation. 2020 has seen widespread public outcry against racial injustice not seen in the United States at this levels since the 1960s.
Does an organization need to be inclusive to be truly resilient? And what does this have to do with Business Continuity?
On December 8th, Vanessa Vaughn Mathews and James Green, renowned business continuity experts, will share with us their personal stories on what racism and privilege look like in both the real world and the business world today, and what we need to do and how we can all work together to create truly inclusive organizations.

Vanessa Vaughn Mathews is the founder and chief resilience officer of Asfalis Advisors. As the President of Asfalis, Vanessa is focused on helping government, commercial, and non-profit leaders manage operational risks. Vanessa’s breadth of experience in emergency management, crisis preparedness and risk management equip Asfalis to support their customers, to include property managers, universities, international and intermodal logistics firms, retailers, the healthcare industry and athletic associations. Prior to Asfalis, Vanessa worked with a Tier 1 intelligence agency and a Fortune 50 company, which equip her to be on the front lines of the industry to restore business and community resiliency.
Vanessa’s engagement with the community has earned her recognition at the local, national and international levels. Mathews was appointed by the Mayor of Charlotte to serve as the Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Charlotte International Cabinet. The Mecklenburg Times recognized Vanessa as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Charlotte, NC (2020). The US State Department recognized her as a “Global Innovation Fellow.” The United Kingdom’s “Acquisition International Magazine” named her as a finalist for the “Best Female Owned and Operated Small Businesses.” Vanessa also co-owns and hosts the Business Resilience DECODED podcast. Additionally, Vanessa was the 1st female in the state of Georgia to graduate with a degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
James Green is the Director of Risk Advisory Services at SAI Global. James is passionate about business continuity and helps C-Suites around the world make their organizations more resilient not just during an incident, but as a fundamental part of day to day operations. James has spent the majority of his career in the financial services industry and has worked on risk events that have occurred all over the globe, whether it was civil unrest in Egypt during the Arab Spring or typhoons in the Pacific Rim.
Previously, Green was the global head of business continuity for Sykes Enterprises, a business process outsourcer with 50,000 employees and 80 locations worldwide. James holds the MBCI designation from the Business Continuity Institute, the Certified Business Continuity Professional certification from the Disaster Recovery Institute International and is recognized as an Enterprise Risk Management Expert by the Credit Union National Association. James is a sought-after speaker, and has been interviewed by multiple publications, on the topics of resilience and workplace violence. In 2020 he was named the Business Continuity Institute’s Continuity and Resilience Consultant of the Americas, becoming the first person to be honored with this award twice.
